Millions of unemployed may never recover, Seattle Times, April 11, 2010

This article in The Seattle Times underscores a trend we've been seeing at Jubilee for the past few years. "Many of the long-term unemployed are older workers," writes the Times. At Jubilee, we've seen the average age of our residents rise, to its current high of 49. 70% of applicants are 50-years-old and over and 40% have a college degree. This trend, coupled with the almost 100% increase in the number of applications received this year over last, tells us that more and more women are falling into homelessness as a result of this challenging economy. The article also states that "Fully 44 percent of the nation's 15 million unemployed have been out of work for more than six months. And evidence suggests many of them may never rebuild their working lives completely." We are in a time of unprecedented need. I hope you will join me in making a gift in honor of women struggling to get their jobs, homes and lives back.
